INSTRUCTIONAL COMPONENTS: tsap assessment |
What, you might be asking, is a TSAP? Well, TSAP stands for the “Teaching Skills Assessment Program.” It is a series of online instruments designed to assess your knowledge, skills and abilities in teacher competence areas. After completing each instrument you will receive a report of your scores in each competency area. Your strengths and developmental areas will be identified for you. You’ll also receive a detailed Action Plan to suggest activities for improving areas defined as weak. In this way, you can shore up gaps in your knowledge before you have interviews or go into a classroom. Completing this process can provide significant advantages as you prepare for teaching as a second career. First, the TSAP helps you become familiar with educator practices. By completing the TSAP, you will come to understand the breadth and depth of the teaching profession – it’s challenges, rewards and expectations. Second, the TSAP provides you with critical information regarding the current state of your teaching skills. Similar to high-quality outplacement services, the results help you understand where you are and what areas need further development. The results allow you to be proactive in creating and executing a professional development plan. Finally, the TSAP actually gives you the foundation of a professional development plan. After completing the assessment, you will be provided with a series of developmental activities designed to enhance specific teaching competencies. The products resulting from each activity can be put into your portfolio. By taking the portfolio with you on interviews, you can show that you understand, and in some cases have demonstrated, the basic skills required for being a classroom teacher.
