classrooms of our nation’s schools has become a very rewarding
second career for many, but more teachers are needed.
This nation’s schools need teachers. In some areas—math,
sciences, special education—the shortages are critical. And when
retired military persons move into these classrooms, they
excel. Skills and personal qualities like leadership,
problem solving, instruction, loyalty, respect, and setting high standards
developed during a military career are skills and qualities that inspire
students to learn, to do their best, and to be solution-oriented.
Retiring military persons with bachelor’s degrees but who did
not earn teacher certification as a part of their college degree are
excellent candidates for alternative certification
programs. These programs are available in many different
formats in almost every state. What they share is that you teach and
are compensated while you complete an accelerated preparation program.
Alternative certification programs make teacher certification achievable
while earning an income.
